What Are Heavy Metals?
Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements such as mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium. They are present in soil, water, and air — and can enter the food supply through agriculture, manufacturing, and environmental exposure.

How Do Heavy Metals Enter Products?
Heavy metals can enter products through soil-grown ingredients, water sources, environmental contamination, or processing equipment. They are often naturally occurring — not intentionally added.

Can Heavy Metals Be Tested?
Yes. Modern laboratory methods can detect heavy metals at extremely low concentrations. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) will report heavy metal concentrations in a product.
How Exposure Is Measured
Heavy metals are typically reported in micrograms (µg) or parts per billion (ppb). For consumer products, risk is evaluated based on the amount consumed per day. Regulatory frameworks such as California Prop 65 establish exposure-based thresholds designed to reduce long-term health risks.
The presence of a heavy metal does not automatically mean a product is unsafe. Context — including daily serving size and cumulative exposure — is critical.

What is the difference between total mercury and methylmercury?
