Where Mercury Pollution Comes From?

Mercury pollution does not start in fish or waterways. It begins in the atmosphere.

Mercury is released into the environment primarily through industrial activity, including coal-fired power plants, mining operations, metal refining, and waste incineration. When coal is burned for electricity, mercury naturally present in the fuel is released into the air as a vapor. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, coal-fired power plants have historically been one of the largest sources of human-generated mercury emissions.

Once released into the atmosphere, mercury can travel thousands of miles before settling onto land or water through rainfall or dust deposition. This means pollution created in one region can contaminate ecosystems far away from the original source.

Scientific studies show that atmospheric mercury can remain airborne for months, circulating globally before eventually entering lakes, rivers, and oceans. This global transport explains why mercury contamination has been detected even in remote environments far from industrial activity.
