Health Effects of Mercury Exposure

Mercury is widely recognized as a potent neurotoxin.

Exposure to mercury—particularly methylmercury—can affect the brain, nervous system, kidneys, and cardiovascular system. The developing brain is especially sensitive, which is why mercury exposure during pregnancy is a major public health concern.

The World Health Organization reports that methylmercury exposure can impair neurological development in children and damage the nervous system in adults. Symptoms of mercury toxicity may include cognitive impairment, coordination problems, memory issues, and sensory disturbances.

Research has also linked mercury exposure to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and immune system dysfunction.

Because mercury accumulates in the body over time, even low-level exposure over long periods may contribute to adverse health effects.
